It started on a beautiful spring morning, one of those days where you can feel summer is just around the corner. The Early Childhood Educators (ECE) took the children for a walk around the neighbourhood to watch for and collect signs of spring – twigs, bark, dried berries, leaves and pieces of evergreen branches. All treasures that had previously been covered by a layer of white snow. The next day, the items were brought out for the children to create a spring time collage. They touched the twigs and bark, and remarked how easily they snapped apart in their fingers. The evergreen smelled like, well, evergreen! The children gently, and carefully touched the needles to their noses to get a whiff of the pine. Although each table had similar items, each child created a unique picture with either a lot of glue, or just a bit, sticking pieces as they saw fit. One of the ECEs put on “The Flight of the Bumble Bee”, and suddenly the room was “a buzz” with conversation! Children heard the quick staccato of the string instruments and remarked that it was “scary music”. Another child said this was the song from Harry Potter, and conversation turned to who was able to watch Harry Potter movies, and who was not. I imagine the ECE was not expecting the music would have that effect on the children. It was delightful to watch them touch, smell, and hear the different signs of spring.
