On Monday we bundled the children up and headed to the Spaghetti Factory for a tour of the restaurant, and a delicious lunch. The children were intrigued with the antiques they saw and the stories about them. They also were given the opportunity to order their own lunch, and practice their table manners. One question that arose was, “Why do we have 2 forks?”, so it was explained that the outside one was used for a salad fork, and the other was used for the main meal. Even though the highlight of a field trip is the destination, we cannot dismiss the importance of the ride on our bus with our beloved bus driver. The children are reminded of the safety rules prior to boarding the bus, and then climb into their car seats or boosters. It is always an exciting moment when they pass something familiar they can recognize and share with their friends, “Hey, that’s where I go for swimming lessons!” or “That’s my store where I go shopping!” It’s is a bonding moment when the other children realize that their friends on the bus have been to the same places. There is no better opportunity at conversation when we are sitting together on the bus, discussing what is passing by the windows, our families, or other relevant information happening in our lives.
